What is a sauna tent?

A sauna tent is a portable sauna that gives you an authentic sauna experience—no matter where you are. Instead of a permanent installation, you can set up the tent in 5 minutes, light the wood-burning stove, and 15–20 minutes later, you’ll be sitting in heat of up to 100°C.Sauna tents have gained immense popularity because they give you the freedom to take your sauna out into nature, use it in your backyard, or bring it to your summer cottage. You get the same deep heat as in a traditional Finnish sauna—just without the building permit, contractors, and the major investment. Smelt Sauna tents are built with a three-layer construction in Oxford 300D polyester (outer + insulating cotton + inner), which keeps the heat in and the weather out. Combined with a stainless steel wood-burning stove and a stone box for sauna stones, you get a genuine sauna experience that can rival permanent saunas at a fraction of the price. Read our complete guide to the best sauna tents of 2026 for an in-depth comparison.Benefits of a sauna tentTake your sauna anywhere. A sauna tent weighs under 20 kg and packs down into a carrying bag. Take it in the car to the beach, the woods, or your summer house—or set it up permanently in your backyard.Ready in 5 minutes. Pull the cord in the middle of each wall and push the roof up from the inside. Assemble the chimney pipes and place the stove inside the tent. No tools, no building permit, no preparation. Authentic sauna heat up to 100°C. The wood-burning stove delivers the same deep, dry heat as a traditional Finnish sauna. Pour water on the sauna stones and enjoy the steam. Health and well-being. Regular sauna use strengthens the immune system, improves blood circulation, and can help you sleep better. The sauna raises your core temperature—when you cool down afterward, it drops extra low, triggering deep sleep. Cheaper than a permanent sauna. A built-in sauna typically costs 50,000–150,000 DKK. A Smelt sauna tent starts at 12,995 DKK, including a wood-burning stove and accessories—and you can take it with you when you move. Social gathering spot. The sauna quickly becomes the new gathering spot for family and friends. Stock up on birch firewood, turn off your phones, and enjoy an evening of warmth and good conversation. How to choose the right sauna tentWhen choosing a sauna tent, three things matter most: size, materials, and the quality of the stove.Size and capacity. Think about how many people will typically use the sauna. For couples and small groups (2–6 people), Smelt Glöd is the obvious choice. For families and larger groups of friends (4–10 people), Smelt Elda offers more space and room to move around. Materials. A good sauna tent must keep the heat in and the weather out. Smelt uses a three-layer construction: Oxford 300D polyester on the outside, insulating cotton in the middle, and Oxford 300D polyester on the inside. This provides significantly better insulation than sauna tents with only a single layer of fabric. The quality of the wood-burning stove. The stove is the heart of your sauna tent. The Smelt stove is constructed of stainless steel with a stone compartment for up to 20 kg of sauna stones. The smoke baffle ensures that smoke is properly vented through the chimney. Six chimney pipes provide sufficient draft height for efficient combustion.Package options. Smelt offers three package tiers—Basic, Premium, and Deluxe—so you can choose exactly the accessories you need. All packages include a sauna tent, wood-burning stove with chimney, stone box, and fire blanket. Glöd vs. Elda—which size is right for you? Glöd: Capacity 2–6 people. Heating time 15–20 minutes. Best for couples and small groups. Price from 12,995 DKK. Elda: Capacity 4–10 people. Heating time 15–30 minutes. Best for families and groups of friends. Price from 14,995 DKK. Both models: Setup 5 minutes. Material: Oxford 300D polyester (three-layer). Stainless steel wood-burning stove with stone box. 2 ventilation openings (top + bottom). Setting up and heating your sauna tent Setup (5 minutes). Unfold the sauna tent on a flat surface. Pull the cord in the middle of each wall and push the roof up from the inside. Secure the tent with the included stakes. Place the fire blanket under the stove and assemble the six chimney pipes. Place the stove in the tent so that the chimney passes through the fire-resistant opening in the roof. Lighting the fire. Use dry, hardwood—preferably birch. Start with small pieces and firelighters, and build up slowly. Never use lighter fluid, gasoline, or softwood. Make sure both ventilation openings are open. Heating (15–20 minutes). Let the stove heat up the tent. When the temperature approaches 70–100°C, the sauna is ready. Place the sauna stones in the stone box on top of the stove. Pour water on the stones to create steam—this significantly increases the perceived heat.Sauna sessions. Take 2–3 sessions of 5–10 minutes in the sauna with cooling breaks in between. Many people enjoy combining the sauna with a cold shower, a dip in the lake, or simply some fresh air. Drink plenty of water before and after. Maintenance and storage Drying after use. Always let the sauna tent dry completely before packing it up. Moisture can lead to mold. Leave the tent open after use so air can circulate.Cleaning. Use a soft brush or damp cloth with mild soap. Never use strong chemicals or bleach. Clean zippers and tent poles—especially after use at the coast, where salt and sand can cause rust. Stove and chimney. Let the stove cool completely before cleaning. Use a soft brush on the exterior. Wipe thoroughly—moisture leads to rust. Check the chimney and ventilation regularly for blockages. Storage. Store the sauna tent and stove in a dry, frost-free place. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, as it can fade the fabric. Small holes can be repaired with weather-resistant repair tape.
